Summary of Activities
- Arts and Social Sciences Let your creative juices flow! Dip maggots into paint and watch them squirm to create an art masterpiece. Entomologist Dr. Gail Anderson will be on site to answer questions about the School of Criminology's Forensic Research Lab and course work in Forensic Studies.
- Business – Beedie School of Business student clubs will have a "Mocktail" Competition where each club creates a delicious mocktail drink and guests get to sample them and rate them. The team with the best rating wins!
- Faculty of Applied Sciences, Engineering:
- Lego Mindstorm Robots - Robots have been built out of lego material with sensors and motors. A program has been set inside the robot for them to compete like Sumo wrestlers!
- Quarter Car Model - "Shaker Car" – is a small version of vibration testing machines.
- Unmanned aerial vehicle – is a physical plane that students have created that will show footage of an actual flight test!
- Ocean Turbine Emulator - is equipment that simulates the process of ocean power generation using turbines.
- Co-op will be hosting a photobooth – capture the moment with professional photo's of you and your friends at the Open House!
- Health Sciences will be hosting a presentation featuring four women studying Health Sciences at SFU who went to India for four months to work with Destiny Reflection, a charitable organization based in Kolkata, India dedicated to ending sex trafficking and slavery, and working towards the empowerment of women.
- Interactive Arts and Technology
- "Head Over Heels" - a design for an interactive heel that could change the way women think and feel about stilettos.
- "Noro" (Portable rainwater harvesting system) - Noro is part of a family of products designed to work in extreme climates to gather water from streams, rivers, snow, fog, and rain. This family of products provides portable water and allows for extended access to fresh water in remote areas.
- "Shark Attack" - Shark Attack is an animated interactive projection that transforms a concrete staircase into an interactive shark tank.
- Reducing Pain through Immersive Environments - Which serious burn victims get more pain relief: those on morphine or those fully immersed in a 3-D skiing adventure computer game?
- School of Computing Science - Come check out our Demos and Displays:
- Towers of Hanoi - Show us how fast your hands are! Try your hand at beating Dr. Thomas Shermer's record time on this mathematical puzzle. Fastest times win prizes!
- Trivia Fun Facts - Do you know there are 845 million monthly users on Facebook? Did you know that 250 million photos are uploaded every day? Come test your knowledge and win a prize!
- Sorting Game - Using the scales, can you sort the canisters from lightest to heaviest?
- Science - Chemistry, Biology and Physics will be hosting various demonstrations and games. There will be an "Aquatic touch tank" in Biology where guests can touch sea creatures!
Other fun activities include free popcorn and food, a Kids Zone with crafts and balloon artist, a henna artist, a caricature artist, a special "Happy Birthday" segment with cupcakes to celebrate SFU Surrey's 10th Year Anniversary (guests can also sign SFU Surrey's giant birthday card!), and a special performance by Dirty Radio!
