Arts and Social Sciences

First Year Experience (FYE)

Making the move from high school to university can be a big step. Arts and Social Sciences offers several exciting FYE options: Explorations, Global Issues FLC, Social & Behavioural Sciences FLC and Crim One. These options will help you get connected to the campus community and find your way to a degree program that you are passionate about. 

The First-Year program that gives you time to think

Explorations invites you to start university in a program that has been specifically designed for first-year students. Whether you have chosen your major or wish to explore your options, Explorations is an exciting way to begin your degree at SFU.

Explorations promises you friendly professors and dynamic teaching in a small-group, participatory environment of discussion and discovery.

Explorations is interdisciplinary: courses explore a wide range of issues, using ideas from areas such as sociology, political science, economics and geography, or literature, the creative arts and cultural studies.

Explorations students develop lifelong skills such as teamwork, critical, analytical and creative thinking and effective communication.

After Explorations, you will have completed the first year of your degree, and you will be able to continue your studies on any SFU campuses: Surrey, Burnaby and Vancouver.

First-Year Learning Communities

A First-Year Learning Community (FLC) is a small group of students in the same are of study who enroll in two core courses in fall and spring terms, meet regularly outside of class time for academic and social activities. There are two FLC's availabe, based on student interests in the following areas:

  • Global Issues: combines first-year courses in World Literature, International Studies and History. If you are interested in global problems and a possible career in Literature, History, International Studies or Political Science, this FLC is for you.
  • Social & Behavioural Sciences: combines first-year courses in Psychology, Sociology and Cognitive Science. If you are interested in how people interact individually or in communities and are thinking of a possible career in Law, Psychology or other social sciences, this FLC is for you.

Crim One

CRIM ONE is an interdisciplinary first-year option at SFU Surrey for students intending to specialize in Criminology. Criminology, the study of crime and how society responds to crime, is a diverse and fascinating field. A degree in Criminology will prepare you for a career in the criminal justice system (e.g., policing, probation or parole).  You can also use your Criminology degree as a foundation for law school. And SFU Surrey is home to the unique minor, diploma, and certificate in Police Studies which will provide the educational foundation for key areas of practice such as forensics, cybercrime investigation, and crime and criminal intelligence analysis.

 Students in CRIM ONE will benefit in a number of ways, including:

  • priority registration in core CRIM ONE and SFU Surrey courses
  • smaller class sizes
  • close contact with professors
  • program planning with student advisor and guidance in course selection
