Nathanael Powell
TechOne, SIAT Alumni
“TechOne opens the door to several cutting-edge degree programs,” says Nathanael Powell, a former TechOne student and Interactive Arts and Technology grad. Nate, as he is known by his classmates, believes that the skills that he acquired through TechOne and SIAT will allow him to pioneer new ideas in the field of education.
“I’m very interested in digital media in the classroom”, says Nate, who plans to do his teaching certificate at SFU this coming year and credits his time in TechOne for bringing out his interest in teaching. “I want to be a teacher. I think it all began in TechOne where we did a lot of group work. I quickly found myself as a regular team leader.”

Nate participated in student activities while at SFU Surrey including volunteering for Open Houses and Orientation, and also volunteered to be a mentor for new students. “TechOne helped to bring out leadership qualities that I didn’t even know I had,” says Nate.
He feels that the small classes and the sense of community that SFU Surrey offers is what made his university experience a success and also comments that he would recommend TechOne to students who are not sure of what they want to do but are willing to try new things. “That’s what happened to me. I thought I wanted to make video games, instead, I found my passion for teaching.”
