Sam Le Riche

Doctoral student, Education Leadership program, Principal, Betty Huff Elementary School

Why SFU? I applied to SFU Surrey because the Ed. D program offered the opportunity to participate in a cohort-based learning environment which focuses on improving professional practice.  In addition, the scholarly and practical expertise combined with the research interests of the faculty and staff promised to provide a focused approach to educational leadership.

What’s unique about the program: The vast array of practical experience and theoretical knowledge amongst the students in the cohort has been of tremendous benefit to my learning. The scholarly discourse and collaborative interactions fostered with and by the faculty and staff have been invaluable. The unique, convenient campus location in a busy urban centre makes for a dynamic university environment.

Favourite Memory: The cohort learning approach has created a 'team' atmosphere amongst our class.  This has been a tremendous asset in my learning and has greatly influenced the degree to which I have felt supported in the program.

Accomplishments:  As a student at UBC I played and coached field hockey, and was once chosen UBC Athlete of the Year and Western Canadian Female Athlete of the Year.

Outside activities: I’m the principal at Betty Huff Elementary School here in Surrey. I’m also still active in field hockey with the Vancouver Hawks club.
